Expectations remained high for Walden bowls as they entered the last round of

fixtures in both the North West Essex League (NWEL) and the Steeple Bumpstead Bowls League SBBL).

Although the title was out of their grasp, the A team hoped for a strong performance away at Dunmow who they had an outsidechance of snatching second place from. However, as has been the case all too often this season, they faltered over the last few ends and ended on the wrong side of a 44-41 defeat. This was not enough for the home side who finished second behind Clavering. In the second division, a comfortable 56-40 win at home over Elsenham, saw the Town side reclaim third place, where they have been most of the season, from Radwinter B. Thaxted A team were the divisional winners.

The SBBL season for the Town team ended in something of a whimper. They came up against a buoyant Balsham side fresh from only their second win of the season the week before. The defeat saw some improving performances from a number of new members from which some confidence for next year’s campaign can be drawn.

The Essex and Herts Senior League matches take place in the daytime and continue into September: the Town side are hoping for a strong finish in their last three fixtures.
