In the AGM and Awards Ceremony at Saffron Walden Town Bowling Club last Monday evening the mood was certainly upbeat. With membership increasing over the year, the accounts in good shape and the green once again in fine fettle, the assembled members appreciated that this would not diminish the need for individuals to step up and build on this platform to maintain the Club's eminent position in the sphere of Essex bowls.
The Player of the Year award was won by Peter Smith whose fine performances on the green were matched by his enterprise and hard work in establishing the U3A Bowling module every Friday morning at the Club. The most promising feature of the awards, though, was the success of two new bowlers who excelled in the team competitions, with Darren Gibbs and Louise Mason scooping am amazing four trophies between them. It was no surprise that they came head to head in the final of the Choppen Cup, a singles competition for non-previous winners of internal trophies, with Darren winning in a close fought contest. Well done, both.
Outdoor bowls will start again in April 2026 but anyone interested in finding out more about the Club or the sport of bowls before then or would like to support the Club in some way can contact us on [email protected]
