The end of season is traditionally marked at Saffron Walden Town Bowling Club by the Captain’s v President’s match. The selection process is shrouded in secrecy and with the teams not announced until just before the start of the match, there is much anticipation as the members arrive. As the cast of the first jack approaches, the formalities begin, this year with the mixed emotions of excitement and remembrance: for the first time the match will be played for the Rhidian Morgan Challenge Cup. Through the hard work and the generous support of the committee and Club members a sparkling cup was unveiled, named in honour of the much-loved, past president who sadly passed away earlier in the year. Rhidian’s widow, Joan, and daughter, Gaynor, were honoured guests and were able to enjoy a match in which President Pete’s side started as underdogs; Captain Alix seemed to have called in some favours to secure the services of the more experienced skips. Though it was a close affair, all four rinks were won for the Captain who was delighted to be the first recipient of The Rhidian Cup.

In other news, Essex and Herts Senior League season finished for Saffron Walden last week. A thumping 8 – 0 win over the champions Elsenham drew their patchy season to a fulfilling end; with a couple of outstanding fixtures elsewhere, confirmation of their final position is awaited.
