A busy week of league action for Saffron Walden Bowling Club’s five league teams saw a mixed bag of results.

In the North West Essex League the A team had a close 61 – 59 win at their Abbey green against Elsenham. With one rink comfortably secured the other two went down to the wire: the home side holding their nerve to claim 4 of the 6 bonus points. Their total of 6 points kept the pressure on the two sides above them. There was disappointment for the B team: despite their 51 – 51 tie with Quendon, they lost on two rinks so they only amassed 3 of the 8 league points available. They also remain in third place. The C team’s good run came to an end away to Dunmow but they remain in fourth place.

The Steeple Bumpstead league side also had a closely contested home win against Castle Camps with good support for both teams on a balmy Friday evening. After seventeen of the eighteen ends on each rink completed, the teams were separated by 6 points meaning that both the rink points and the overall result could have gone either way. With three bowlers new to the game across the Walden team, the home side were delighted to secure two of the three rinks with a 53 – 49 points win consolidating their second position.

The Essex and Herts Seniors side lost for a second time on the road to rivals Sawbridgeworth but with other sides at the top swapping points over the last few weeks remain in contention for a top two finish.

If you are interested in finding out more about bowls or just supporting the club sides, do pop down on Monday, Wednesday or Friday this week and take a look; you will be most welcome. The clubhouse has a well-stocked licensed bar.
